Whenever a new year arrives, millions of Americans and people around the world put losing weight, improving health and getting in better shape as top resolutions.
A group of us health experts challenge you to confront and defeat your sugar habit as a vital, potentially life-changing step to help you peel off pounds with ease and perhaps also resolve numerous health issues such as soaring blood pressure, failing memory, scary heart palpitations and even pre-diabetes, cancer and heart disease.
Please join about a dozen of us -- authors of "competing" books about sugar, doctors and nutritionists -- on Jan. 16 from 12 noon Eastern to 1:30 p.m. Eastern on my Gab With the Gurus Radio Show when we issue the Great Worldwide Sugar-Out Challenge to that you can begin that day to permanently change your relationship with sweets and refined carbs.
We have several goals for presenting The Great Worldwide Sugar-Out Challenge. We want to draw attention to the fact that the average American and the typical person in civilized countries the world over consumes way, way, way too much sugar -- about a whopping 170 pounds of sugar per year or one cup a day. (By "sugar," we mean all caloric sweeteners, including high fructose corn syrup, glucose syrup and dextrose and honey.)
We're also presenting this first-of-a-kind Great Worldwide Sugar-Out Challenge to wake you up to the fact that by overloading on sugar, high fructose corn syrup and other sweeteners, you could develop more than 100 health problems, including obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer's (PCOS), failing memory, anxiey, mental confusion, sexual dysfunction and infertility. In addition, too much sugar can cut your life short and age you more quickly.
One of our guests on special, hour-and-a-half long radio show will be the renowned "First Lady of Nutrition" Ann Louise Gittleman, Ph.D., a diet/detox expert, visionary and author of the really helpful, practical book, Get the Sugar Out: 501 Simple Ways to Cut the Sugar Out of Any Diet, which was recently revised and updated. (Photo is above.)
On the special, hour-and-a-half long Gab With the Gurus Radio Show on Jan. 16, we also will be joined by the anti-sugar pioneer Dr. Nancy Appleton, Ph.D., author of Lick the Sugar Habit.
Nancy has
been educating people and warning them about the dangers of sugar since the 1970s.
Perhaps you've seen Nancy's scary, jaw-droppingly large list of 146 Reasons Why Sugar is Ruining Your Health. This continually expanding laundry list has been been widely circulated on the Internet and has been pivotal to nudging countless numbers of people around the world to quit the sweet stuff.
In addition, we'll be joined by the kind, nurturing, supportive Roberta Ruggiero, founder and president of the Hypoglycemia Support Foundation, which, during the past 29 years, has helped millions of people from Sri Lanka to San Francisco, from Chicago to Costa Rica.
If you're plagued by confusing ailments, you'll want to check the hypoglycemia quiz here or purchase Roberta's book The Do's and Don'ts of Hypoglycemia: An EveryDay Guide to Controlling Blood Sugar.
For my part, I'm honored and delighted that both Ann Louise, Nancy and Roberta are joining us, because their books, along with William Dufty's eye-opening Sugar Blues, were my main sources of comfort when I was kicking sugar back in 1998 on doctor's orders. (My own book SUGAR SHOCK! How Sweets and Simple Carbs Can Derail Your Life--And How You Can Get Back on Track didn't come out until years later, in 2007.)
Also appearing for our Great Worldwide Sugar-Out Challenge on the Gab With the Gurus Radio Show is famed pediatric neurosurgeon Dr. Larry McCleary, author of The Brain Trust Program.
Dr. McCleary will tell you how too much sugar can make your brain shrink, wither or atrophy. As I mentioned last January on my SUGAR SHOCK! Blog, he says that if you want to age your brain, all you have to do is eat the typical American diet!
Of course, kicking sugar to lose weight or resolve other horrible health problems already has been proven by millions, who've followed this advice offered in such books as Sugar Busters: Cut Sugar to Trim Fat, Dr. Gott's No Flour, No Sugar Diet and Potatoes, Not Prozac, and of course, the The Atkins Diet and The South Beach Diet.
The idea for a worldwide challenge comes from
Dr. Scott Olson, a Colorado-based naturopath, researcher and health adviser, whose 30-day, stop-sugar challenge I learned about in late December, thanks to Google alerts. Dr. Olson just released the new book, Sugarettes, whose title, of course, is intended to make you think of cigarettes. (Clever, eh?)
After reading the challenge, I was so impressed by Scott's passion and commitment to helping people give up sugar to gain better health and improved life that I quickly tracked him down, called him and asked if I could join his effort.
When Scott eagerly invited me to come on board, we then discussed designating one special day akin to the Great American Smokeout. But we chose to make ours a worldwide event, because excess sugar consumption is a pervasive problem that reaches industrialized cities in every corner of the globe.
Scott and I then decided that we could best help people by holding The First Annual Great Worldwide Sugar-Out Challenge, with the focal point being a special hour-and-a-half-long Gab With the Gurus Radio Show that features numerous health experts, especially fellow authors of "competing" sugar books. (I'd had the amazing opportunity to interview many of them for my book SUGAR SHOCK!)
The concept of challenge is an effective one that appeals to people the world over. In fact, I've heard from thousands of people from all over the U.S., Canada, Great Britain, Costa Rica, etc. who've read my book SUGAR SHOCK! How Sweets and Simple Carbs Can Derail Your Life--And How You Can Get Back on Track and then took us (contributing author Dr. Stephen Sinatra and I) up on the 21-day challenge that we issued.
These happy (what I call) "Sugar Kickers" write to proudly share (see some of their remarks here) that they've taken the challenge to heart and found that removing sugar completely transformed their lives, enabling them to get rid of excess weight, as well as banish heart palpitations, infertility, low libido, anxiety and severe PMS. Kicking or curtailing your sugar intake could even prevent or enable you to manage type 2 diabetes, resolve or improve heart problems and help cancer to go into remission.
By the way, during our Great Worldwide Sugar-Out Challenge on the Gab With the Gurus Radio Show, you may hear differing points of view from us sugar experts about how, why or for how long you should quit sugar, because we don't completely agree with each other about everything.
What this means is that you'll get ample information to allow you to make a decision as to what works best for you. (Our two biggest areas of disagreement have to do with how you should quit sugar and whether or not you should consume artificial sweeteners and stevia at the same time. For instance, you may hear one guru urge you to quit sugar cold turkey and another tell you that doing so is ineffective and that you need to go gradually to give your body and mind a chance to catch up with your enthusiasm. In addition, you may hear one or two experts say that it's OK to chew sugar-free gum and have sugarless candies while several of us are absolutely adamant about how you absolutely should steer clear of the fake stuff.)
What all of us experts and authors of sugar books do agree upon is that too much sugar -- which is typically consumed by the average American or typical person in other "civilized" countries around the world -- can wreak dangers galore on you, from heart disease to type 2 diabetes.
If you haven't quit sugar yet as a new year's resolution to lose weight or get improve health, you don't have to turn your back on the substance yet. Just join us on Jan. 16 on the Gab With The Gurus Radio Show to learn how too much sugar could harm you and how your life will be much better and healthier without sweets and refined carbs. You're sure to be educated, inspired and motivated by us to take action that day.
Stay tuned for more details and names of guests to appear on The Great Worldwide Sugar-Out Challenge, because I'm still working on getting more authors of "competing" books. And keep checking back here, because I will have a surprise announcement about something we're planning that could help millions of you.
In this high-tech day and age, no event is complete without using some new Internet tool. For The Great Worldwide Sugar-Out Challenge, people from around the world will be invited to get Twitter accounts and to use it as a valuable tool and ally to help them while they're quitting sugar on that one day.
In fact, in addition to our posting encouraging messages and other tidbits every day on www.Twitter.com/ConnieBennett and www.Twitter.com/olsonnd, Scott and I will provide frequent educational, inspirational, helpful tweets for 24 hours using our new TwitAsYouQuit account.
Please check back here often, because I'm changing this post often as more authors of sugar books and experts join us in our first-of-a-kind effort. (Collaboration -- even among so-called "competing authors" -- is so much more fun and rewarding than doing things on your own.)

Great site, lots of good information
